Angels on His Shoulders

~ Ruby Vine Leads with Divine Guidance

Description

Ruby Vine is the founder of Railroad Salvage and owns a number of businesses in Connecticut and Florida. But what makes Vine so fascinating is, according to Judi Neal, a special trait that he possesses: "He is someone who is attracted to what's never been done before and who feels guided by the unseen in his life." In fact, Vine attributes his great success in the business world to "two angels" that helped him throughout his life. And those "angels" are what this article covers, as Neal profiles a business leader who turns, often, to "divine guidance."

Building Bridges

~ Carol Ross and the Art of Crossing Paradigms

Description

Carol Ross is someone who should be in the spotlight because of her capacity to change the paradigms inside the companies in which she has worked. Neal says that Carol Ross describes herself as "an organizational gardener," someone who can create "the right conditions to bring out the best in people." In other words, Ross is "a cultural catalyst," which is an important designation in a world looking desperately for positive change.

The Flight of the Mystical Designer

~ Igor Sikorsky, His Helicopters, and His Legend

Description

Today, helicopters are a fact of life. But that was only because of the life and works of Igor Sikorsky, someone who came to America as a poor immigrant and founded the successful company that helped to make helicopters part of the world's transportation systems. This article is part of Judi Neal's continuing series that looks at edgewalkers, "someone who walks between two worlds." Of Sikorsky, she notes: "Even though he passed away 30 years ago, Igor Sikorsky's legacy and spirit are alive and well in the company, and he continues to inspire the people who work there." Neal overviews Sikorsky's life, focusing especially on the things he did that provide ongoing inspiration. "We can learn a great deal," Neal says, "from his life, his vision, and his values."

Meditation and Global Connections

~ Michael Stephen, Lessons from Chairman of Aetna International

Description

Is there room for spirituality in the executive suite? There certainly is, based on the experience and practices of Michael Stephen, who is the retired chairman of Aetna International, a major insurer and financial services enterprise. Stephen wrote a book about his reliance upon spirituality (Spirituality In Business), and, in this e-Doc, Judi Neal captures the unique essence of Stephen as a leader and as a business executive. At one point, Neal asks Stephen if he has had to pay a price for his spirituality (which he announced publicly at a conference in 1995). His refreshingly blunt answer: "Not that I'm aware of. To be honest with you, I don't give a damn if people think I'm weird. This is what I have to do."

Spreading Spiritual Wisdom

~ Tami Simon, Business Leader, CEO OF Sounds True

Description

In this e-Document, Judi Neal skillfully captures the personality and zeal of Tami Simon, who leads the multimillion dollar enterprise, Sounds True, a company that publishes spoken-word audio programs, videos and music for the inner life. Says Neal: "Tami Simon is not your typical business executive. She is a profound example of the new type of leader who is emerging in the business world today." After summarizing Tami's background, the article lists the unique ways that Tami operates as the chief of a business. "Every inch a spiritual seeker," says Neal, "Tami sees her work as a place for spiritual development for herself and her employees. As they learn from the wisdom teachers that they record, Sounds True employees strive to live and work in congruence with these teachings." The article ends with the 19-point Core Aspirations of Sounds True.

She also has a doctorate in management science and is a vice president of marketing research for a large financial institution. "Edgewalkers are a new breed of leader," says Neal, who profiles the typical edgewalker by discussing the ideas and behaviors of this business executive.

Integrity is the Bottom Line

~ Aaron Feuerstein, Focusing On

Description

In her continuing series that looks at edgewalkers, "someone who walks between two worlds," Judi Neal overviews the amazing story of Aaron Feuerstein, the CEO of Malden Mills in Lawrence, Massachusetts. When his mill burned down in December 1995, Feuerstein did a number of things that surprised many people. He pledged to rebuild the mill and keep it in Lawrence. While doing that, he paid all employees their salaries and benefits for the next three months. Who would do that? Anyone who underestimates Feuerstein, says Neal, underestimates the deep nature of his faith and his ability to walk between the worlds of "hard commerce" and doing "the right thing."
